The course fee shall depend on duration, pre-training experience, and skill of the candidate.  Narayana Nethralaya does not have accommodation facilities.  The trainees are required to arrange their own accommodation and transportation. Wide-field ROP Imaging

Eligibility: Doctors, Nurses, Technicians, Ophthalmic Assistants, Optometrists interested in screening for Retinopathy of Prematurity. No prior experience is required.

Duration: Four weeks (2-12 weeks in exceptional cases)​

  • Wide-field imaging performed by non-physicians is a validated, effective method for extending ROP care to infants in outreach centers. Initiated in Bangalore by KIDROP in 2008, this method is officially recognized as a screening modality by India's National Operational Guidelines for ROP (2017-18).

  • Our comprehensive training program aims to develop accredited imaging specialists capable of maintaining stringent quality control and upholding the highest ethical standards in infant imaging. 

  • Trainees receive hands-on experience with advanced wide-field cameras, including RetCam and Forus Neo.

  • Practical guidance is also provided on establishing and expanding tele-ROP services, including vital IT infrastructure considerations.

  • Certification is awarded upon successful completion of the training, validating each participant’s expertise in wide-field imaging techniques for ROP.

Eligibility: Ophthalmologists

Duration: Two to four weeks (customized after interview)

  • ROP screening training as detailed above.

  • Treatment training covers laser therapy (532 nm Nd:Yag, Green) and Anti-VEGF injections, performed under topical anesthesia.

  • Trainees gain hands-on experience with laser treatment and intravitreal injections, although the exact number of cases during training may vary.

  • On average, KIDROP treats between 25-50+ infants monthly.

  • KIDROP adheres to the latest laser therapy and anti-VEGF guidelines. 

  • All treatment sessions are documented through imaging before and after procedures, and practical techniques are thoroughly discussed to achieve optimal outcomes.

ROP Screening and Treatment

ROP Screening

Eligibility: Ophthalmologists, Neonatologists, Pediatricians

Duration: One to six weeks (customized after interview)

  • Trainees will join the KIDROP team on field visits to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), traveling 5-6 days a week. Teams visit multiple NICUs daily across diverse outreach regions within Karnataka state.

  • During NICU screenings, trainees will conduct indirect ophthalmoscopy examinations on a select group of infants, examining approximately 50-75 babies each week.

  • Practical training emphasizes technique refinement, accurate diagnosis, decision-making, and adherence to follow-up protocols, aligning with the latest National ROP Screening Guidelines.

  • For those interested in imaging-based screening, additional training in wide-field imaging techniques is provided both at our headquarters and during outreach visits. 

  • Neonatologists and pediatricians receive specialized training in imaging-based screening methods, as outlined in the National ROP Screening Guidelines.

  • Ophthalmologists without prior experience in indirect ophthalmoscopy for adult patients will also be trained in imaging-based screening techniques.
